Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

The holidays are coming up quickly, so you might be starting to plan your Thanksgiving menu. It can be overwhelming to plan a meal with a number of dishes, especially if you're hosting more people than usual. But you don’t need to buy canned cranberry sauce to save time on Thanksgiving Day. It’s quick and easy to make at home, and is a great dish to prepare a day or two in advance since it’s served chilled.

Here, we wanted to share one of our favorite recipes. It’s not too sweet, has a good amount of cinnamon and the orange pairs well to create a more dimensional flavor. Plus, it all comes together in about 15 minutes.

Ingredients:

12oz bag of fresh cranberries

½ cup sugar

½ cup orange juice, if squeezing fresh, about 2 oranges

½ cup water

Pinch of salt

Cinnamon stick

Piece of orange peel

Directions:

  1. Prep your orange peel. All you have to do is cut a bit of the rind off an orange with a knife or vegetable peeler. You don’t want too much of the bitter pith, so cut as much of it off as you can.
  2. Combine orange juice, water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the cranberries, salt, cinnamon stick and orange peel to the saucepan.
  4. Bring to a simmer (lower heat if needed) and cook for about 10 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have popped. Stir frequently.
  5. Take off the heat and let cool to room temperature before transferring to another bowl. It will thicken as it cools. Cover and store in the refrigerator until completely chilled.

Enjoy!
